we will never forget the sacrifice to the country. >> she lost herlife for our country. our daughter is a hero. >> cbs news starts now. ♪ ♪ >> good evening and thank you for being with us on this busy friday night. we want to begin with the breaking news. the united states beginning a series of retaliatory air strikes on sites. they have clear irrefutable evidence that it is related to the attacks in jordan. the strikes were successful but the damage assessment will be done when the sun rises in the region. this is just the beginning. the response will continue. here is what we know. three of the locations hit are in iraq. four are in syria and there were dozens of individual targets within each site. those planes are now out of harm's way. it comes on the same day

president biden and jill biden were at dover air force base in delaware for the dignified transfer of the remains of those fallen service members. we were the first journalists and saw the work being done firsthand to deter iranian backed groups from attacking american assets in the region. we have team coverage from the pentagon to the middle east and we want to begin with nancy, who was at the white house. we are hearing from the commander-in-chief tonight. >> the president issued a statement saying all the facilities the u.s. struck this afternoon had been used to attack u.s. forces. he added if you harm an american, we will respond. >> two bombers were among the military aircraft used to strike more than 85 targets in iraq and syria. targets included command and

control centers and drone storage facilities, all linked to iran's revolutionary guard and affiliated militia groups. the strikes were approved by the president and launched a few hours after he welcomed in the bodies of three fallen service members back to u.s. soil. all three were stationed in jordan at a u.s. outpost known as tower 22 that came under fire last sunday. the system had been taken off-line to allow a u.s. drone to return from a mission safely. a drone struck the base and wounded 40 and killed breonna moffett and kennedy sanders. >> u.s. officials blamed the

attack on the islamic resistance in iraq. >> i don't think the adversaries have a one-and-done mind-set. they have a lot of capability. i have a lot more. >> the u.s. has avoided striking iran directly, despite at least 165 attacks on u.s. forces in% iraq and syria since the conflict began last october. the president warned we will not start a war but if a cruel force wants to bully us, the islamic republic of iran will give a strong response. u.s. officials said the strikes were in the work for days but they waited until the weather presented the best opportunity. they said the b-1 bombers involved took off from the united states and they signaled there could be more strikes in

the coming days. >> we want to bring in david martin at the pentagon. good evening. the president telegraphed some of these would be coming. did that impact their effectiveness? >> the military was perplexed by the degree to which they telegraphed the strikes. it gave militia leaders and operatives time to get out of the country or go to ground by surrounding themselves with women and children. if they intend to resume their strikes against american troops, they have to come out of hiding. if the strikes were successful, they won't have much to work with. >> we heard this began tonight but it won't end tonight. >> the president has directed

additional -- there will be at least one more day of strikes and it will be another round of joined strikes against targets in yemen. >> there are multiple targets in different places. on that note, there are heightened fears of a widening war in the middle east. debora patta traveled to the border this week. is there a risk of response from hezbollah? >> it is unlikely iran will choose to respond directly against the u.s., but one possibility would be through its proxy, which is based in lebanon right on the israeli border.

the military has been trading fire with hezbollah fighters since the hamas attack on october 7th and there has been a lot of israeli troops on the ready in the north and benjamin netanyahu has threatened to turn beirut into gaza. hezbollah's leader has warned if israel wages war against them, it will be costly. hezbollah has an arsenal of over 150,000 missiles, which according to analysts, are five times larger and more accurate than what hamas uses in gaza. >> thank you. for more context and reporting, let's bring in margaret brennan. the president has made clear he does not want a wider conflict, but this is difficult. they are trying to thread the needle.

>> they are. this is going to be measured in terms of deterrence. success can be judged by whether these militias continue to strike at the u.s. as they have more than 165 times just since the month of october with last week and the deadliest. he is also trying to decide whether to keep that military presence in the region. is it essential or are they at risk? three officials in the past week have said to me they assess iran has lost control of some of these militias and that makes it harder. they are very close with the militia debora patta mentioned. israel's ongoing war has the entire middle east on an edge and president biden is trying to keep out of israel pulling the u.s. into a war going head-to-head with iran. >> these strikes are pinpricks. why hasn't there been an effort to take out the irgc, these groups that have been embedded

in iraq and syria, command and control? >> that is the criticism. some officials have come out and president biden to be more forceful here. one thing they are trying to assess, what tips that balance, what draws in the united states, if you can only focus on equipment, radar, and targeting, is that enough or do you need to go out and take out leaders as trump did in 2020. the decision to take out that general has left a leadership vacuum in some ways. everything has a consequence. >> a jury is set to deliberate the case of the first parent of a school shooter to face

criminal charges for their child's actions. jennifer crumbley is charged after her teenage son killed four students in 2021. lilia luciano was in the courtroom as prosecutors wrapped up their case. >> you could have been with him. >> i could have, yes. >> and you did not. >> nope. >> prosecutors tried to tear apart jennifer crumbley's portrayal of an involved parent. >> he ask you for help. >> i do not deny that. >> you don't deny he told his only friend you laughed at him. >> i do not deny that. >> prosecutors pain in her as a woman more concerned with an extramarital affair and hobbies like horses. >> you said half of your salary goes to the horses. >> while ignoring her sons cry for help, like drawing shown to her by the school staff.

doubt. >> juries will be back here on monday to begin deliberations. if convicted, she faces a maximum of 60 years in prison. >> turning to the weather with california dealing with flooding roads, atmospheric rivers are bearing down on the state. >> another strong storm moving into the west coast, going to bring a lot of rain. if los angeles ends up getting 6 inches of rain, this will end up being the wettest seven day period and almost 15 years because of this. a strong atmospheric river, moisture pointed into southern california and central

california, bringing this moisture up into the mountains, getting more rain up to possibly a foot of rain in some areas. there is a high risk for life-threatening and damaging flooding, not just a possibility but it is likely on sunday into monday there will be flash flooding. >> thank you. the district attorney overseeing the election interference case against donald trump and georgia admitted today to having a personal relationship with the lead prosecutor in the case. fani willis says her relationship with nathan wade has no bearing on the case. trump and codefendants say she should be removed from the case, calling the relationship a conflict of interest. investigators are trying to figure out what caused a small plane to crash in clearwater, florida. the pilot and two people on the ground were killed, just 3 miles from the nearest airport. cristian benavides is on the scene.

>> huge explosion. >> neighbors described after a small plane crashed as terrifying. >> i was screaming call 911. >> an airplane crash at this location is now on fire. >> firefighters were on scene battling the blaze. four homes caught on fire and most of the plane was inside one of them. >> they were able to throw a significant amount of water and foam on all those structures to extinguish the fire quickly. >> the craft left from the vero beach regional airport on route to clearwater airpark but less than an hour after takeoff, the pilot reported engine failure. another pilot described the scene. >> they went down hard. >> before crashing, the pilot

was heard saying mayday, mayday, mayday. >> the impact of what we saw and the high-impact component of it trends to the fact that nobody is going to be able to survive that. >> a neighbor lives in this community heard the explosion. >> we are still shaken up. >> the ntsb is on scene investigating and they are expected to remove the wreckae tomorrow. this could have been worse. as many as nine people were inside the home where the plane crashed and all except two of them have left the home just minutes prior to the incident. >> that is remarkable. the u.s. economy is showing signs of strength. 353,000 jobs were added last month.
